My neighbor is a dentist and just started a practice, and they asked me to design their logo! This was the first logo I’ve done for a dentist, and the first few sketches I did were really cliché (think toothbrush, smiles, and all that scary stuff). But that’s the reason I sketch FIRST—to get out all the overused ideas so I can execute the GOOD ideas on the computer. This logo was the first good idea I had, and out of the three designs I gave them to choose from, I just kept going back to this one. I like how it not only represents a tooth, but could be a ridge as well. I was so glad they chose this one!

After the logo process, we designed business cards, letterhead, envelopes, appointment cards, coupons, thank you cards, and banners.

My nephew got married recently and I designed their invitations. They pretty much gave me free reign, just specified colors. I wanted the invitation to be a reflection of their relationship: McKay is a man’s man, Summer is all girl; and they are perfectly matched.

The typeface I used for the body text is somewhat masculine, with clean lines and open counters. I matched it with a sophisticated, bold striped typeface that I think has both masculine and feminine qualities. A not-too-fancy script typeface, along with flourishes add the “required” feminine detail. A portion of the flourish is on the insert cards, which pulls it all together.

Instead of just one photo included in the envelope, they wanted a collage. I combined their favorite photos with matching type to complete the set.

Printed on shimmery paper, these eye-catching invitations are bound to stay on the fridge longer than usual.
